Frequently Asked Questions
- Is everybody welcome?
- Yes. We want this church to be a warm and accepting place for all people at all places in their spiritual journey. No matter where you are, our hope is to walk beside you as each of us takes steps toward having a closer relationship with God.
- How did you get your name?
- All of life is a journey--physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Each of us is at a different place on that journey, but still we are traveling. We would love for you to join us as we discover and explore this exciting path toward God.
- When did the new church start?
- Our first public worship service was Sunday, October 3, 2004 at 10:00 a.m.. 170 people attended the first service! We are meeting in the Regal Cinema on Airport Way in Fairbanks, and celebrated the entire month of October as our grand opening month. For location and directions see the About Us/Location/Directions section of the web site.
- Why meet in a movie theatre?
- Here are a few reasons:
- Everybody in the Fairbanks area knows where it is.
- Most comfortable "church seats" in town.
- It is a place where this community frequently gathers and is familiar with.
- Great facilities: clean bathrooms, ATM, snack bar, big lobby, arcade, family entertainment following services.
- The lead minister likes movies and will occasionally stay for a good one.
- As we grow in size we can simply switch to a larger auditorium without having to change our overall location.
- We can take the offering in pop corn buckets.
- Plenty of parking spots and cleared of snow in the winter.
- Huge screens for showing movie clips, over-heads or illustrations.
- Nothing beats the smell of popcorn.
- Why start a new church in Fairbanks?
- We were comfortable in Indianapolis, in the congregation where I served for eight years. However, as time wore on we came to a growing conviction that God wanted us to move to the Fairbanks area and start a new congregation. After lots of prayer and fasting we moved here and began to lay the ground work. Even though there are a lot of churches in Fairbanks, there are many people here who have not yet connected with one of them. It is our hope that many who are not Christians but are seeking God will find a place of joy and discovery at Journey. We hope to see the transformation of many lives as God works through this new congregation.
- What makes Journey unique and different?
- You're going to have to come and see for yourself.
- What do you offer for my children?
- Each week there will be a well staffed nursery for infants and a quality worship experience geared for children. They will experience fun while learning about God and how to grow in a relationship with Him. There will be other events, as well, for children periodically in homes and in the community.
- Why should I come?
- It just might change your life.
- What does Journey Christian Church believe?
- We believe that God is real and that he desires for each of us to have a meaningful, significant and joy filled life. The path to hope here on earth and in heaven afterwards, is a relationship with Jesus Christ. We believe the Bible is the Word of God and we affirm all that it teaches. If you would like more information on this question, a full statement of our beliefs can be found in the About Us/What We Believe section of this web site.
- What should I wear?
- Whatever you normally wear. Depending on the season you'll find people in anything from shorts to car harts, tank tops to sweatshirts or flip flops to bunny boots. It's your call. The important thing is that you come!
- Who is Journey Christian Church connected with?
- Journey is a non-denominational congregation that acknowledges all who follow Jesus Christ as family. We are part of a network of independent, non-denominational churches around the world simply called the Christian Church. We are a daughter church of Chapel Rock Christian Church, East 91st Street Christian Church,
Plainfield Christian Church and University Heights Christian Church in Indiana. The Christian Evangelistic Association & East 91st Street Christian Church are the managing partners in helping to start Journey. Other congregations that have helped tremendously in the starting of Journey are: Clayton Christian Church, Grassy Creek Christian Church, Harmony Christian Church, Kingsway Christian Church, Markle Church of Christ, Park Chapel Christian Church & Southport Heights Christian Church.
